Leaky and rotten water pipes? Climaxx finds the source, replaces the bad run and handles the piping that ties into boilers and radiant heat. Open 24 hours a day.

How leaky and rotten pipes announce themselves before they let go

Climaxx asks the question the way a homeowner would: leaky and rotten water pipes? Pipes seldom fail without warning. A damp spot on a basement ceiling, green crust at a fitting, a drip you only notice at night, a stain spreading across drywall or water pressure that has slowly sagged are all the same story told in different rooms, and each one is worth a phone call.

Rot is the slow version. Metal pipe corrodes from the inside and the outside, walls thin out, and a pinhole opens where the metal was weakest. Brown water at the tap, flaking scale and a pipe that weeps at every joint all mean the run is near the end of its life. Patching one leak on a tired line often just moves the next leak a few feet down.

Water also travels. It follows a joist, runs along a pipe and drips somewhere that looks nothing like the source. That is why a leak found in the corner of a finished ceiling can start two rooms away. If you see water, shut off the supply to that line if you can, put a bucket under the drip, and call so the actual cause gets found.

Find the source first, then replace the run instead of patching it

A repair that holds starts with tracing the water back to where it begins. That means following the line from the stain, checking fittings and valves along the way, and looking at the pipe itself, not just the joint that happens to be wet. Cutting into the wrong place makes a bigger mess, so the crew finds the source before anything is opened.

When the pipe around the leak is sound, one fitting or one section may be all it needs. When the pipe is rotten, the better answer is to replace the whole bad run. Old pipe gets cut out and new pipe goes in, with connections made clean and supported along the joists so it does not sag or knock when the water starts and stops.

A good replacement also leaves the system easier to live with. A shutoff valve placed where it can be reached means the next repair, or a faucet swap, does not require shutting down the whole house. The picture is an illustration of that idea: new copper supply line, a brass valve and the old corroded pipe cut out and set on the floor.

Where the water piping meets the heating system

Climaxx is a heating and cooling company first, so a lot of its piping work sits right beside the equipment it already services. A boiler is full of water and tied into the house with supply and return pipes, valves and a circulator. When those pipes leak or rot, the boiler loses pressure, and the radiators or baseboards upstairs go cold even though the burner is working.

The same goes for radiant heat. In-floor loops carry warm water through the floor, and the manifold and the pipes feeding it are part of the heating system as much as the boiler is. A tired supply line near a boiler or manifold deserves attention before winter, because a leak there tends to show itself on the coldest night of the year.

A water heater and a furnace-mounted humidifier each have a water line of their own, and those connections age too. Because one crew works on the pipes and the equipment, the piping job and the heating job can be planned together. Nicole wrote that Justin took the time to explain everything clearly. That is how a piping visit should go too.
